Play therapy is a unique form of psychological therapy offered to children, predominantly primary-aged children, although it can be beneficial for older children and even adults depending on the child’s needs. Play therapy works by providing children with a physically and psychologically safe environment where they can process their experiences at their own pace. Within the play therapy space, children are mostly given control to explore their experiences, whether past or present, at their own pace. Please refer to the resources in the drop-down menu for a booklet on understanding play therapy for professionals.

Individual play therapy

Symphysis offers play therapy to individual children either in the clinic in Orpington or at an alternative setting provided by the organisation/school or local authority. However, the setting that is made available will need to be a suitable space to ensure that play therapy is as effective for the children as possible. This includes a consistent space – a place available on the same day at the same time each week – and a sizeable room that is a minimum of 3 square meters and provides a confidential environment. The requirements for individual play therapy can be discussed further during the consultation period with a member of the team at Symphysis.

If you wish to make a referral to play therapy, you can contact Symphysis directly or download and complete the professional’s referral form, which can be found in the ‘forms’ section from the drop-down menu.

Therapeutic consultation

Symphysis provides therapeutic consultation to organisations, educational institutes, and local authorities. Consultations can be useful for various reasons, such as helping to explore the most effective and nurturing approaches towards children’s behavior, understanding how a more playful approach can be employed in caring for children and young people, and exploring more effective therapeutic interventions for individual children. Therapeutic consultations can be held either with individual professionals or in a larger group of professionals. They can be carried out on a planned and regular weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis or on a more irregular basis.

Working with parents

Symphysis also offers parenting workshops or 1:1 parenting support, which can help parents develop themselves and view parenting through a more therapeutic lens. This includes aiding parents in understanding the importance of play, comprehending the attachment bond, and adopting a therapeutic approach to behavior support. Work with parents can take place over a number of weeks or months, depending on the needs and resources of the organisation/school or local authority.

Workshops can be offered either during the day or evening to meet the needs of the clients.

Bespoke training

Symphysis offers organisations, schools, and local authorities unique and bespoke training packages to meet their individual needs and the needs of the organisation. This may include working with parents therapeutically or understanding the role of playfulness in working with children. Please contact Symphysis to arrange a free consultation to discuss your individual training needs.
